Your city tour begins in the lively seaside district of Miraflores, one of Lima’s most enchanting areas. In the historic center of town, you’ll visit the lovely Santo Domingo Church and Larco Herrera Museum, famed for its fine pre-Columbian artifacts. Stroll with your guide through Barranco, a charming enclave where historic 19th-century buildings are now home to thriving galleries and studios. Meals: (B)
Day 4 - Sacred Valley of the Inca
Fly to Cuzco where you’ll be greeted by Ana Maria. Journey with her into the Sacred Valley to visit the Cochahuasi Animal Sanctuary, dedicated to the rescue of endangered Andean animals. At Awanacancha, see llamas and alpacas in their natural habitat, and learn about ancient weaving techniques. Explore the colorful town of Pisac and have lunch before checking in to the Casa Andina Private Collection Hotel. With little ambient light, the Sacred Valley is a great place to star gaze. Tonight, head over to your resort’s planetarium and observatory to marvel at the constellations of the Southern Sky.* Meals: (B, L)
Day 5 - Explore the Sacred Valley
Tour the mountaintop fortress of Ollantaytambo with Ana Maria and stop by a local chicheria to learn about chicha, an Andean beverage distilled from corn. Then visit the studio of Pablo and Marilu Seminario – renowned pottery artisans who draw on ancient techniques and designs. Tonight, witness a Pago a la Tierra, a Tribute to the Earth, performed by an Andean shaman. Meals: (B, L)
Day 6 - Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu by rail
A two-day visit to the Lost City of the Inca begins with a rail journey through the spectacular Sacred Valley. Arrive Machu Picchu and explore the mountain citadel as Ana Maria illuminates the history of the ancient Inca. Retreat to the enchanting Inkaterra El Pueblo Hotel, nestled in a riverside cloud forest at the base of Machu Picchu. Meals: (B, L, D)
Day 7 - Machu Picchu - Cuzco
We include your transportation and entry ticket so you can ascend again to explore the Lost City early this morning at your own pace. Stand in awe as the sun casts its first light upon the ancient stones of Machu Picchu; it’s a powerful and unforgettable experience. With morning dew, the paths can be slippery, requiring caution. En route to Cuzco, stop in Chincheros, a high-mountain town known for its skilled weavers. Spend three nights at the charming El Mercado Hotel, set in a splendidly renovated historic building in the heart of Cuzco. Meals: (B, D)
Day 8 - Cuzco
Join Ana Maria this morning to discover Cuzco’s iconic landmarks, including Sacsayhuaman and the Temple of the Sun. Then mingle with city residents at the lively San Pedro Market and visit Almudena Cemetery to experience traditional facets of daily life here in the Andes. Return to your city central hotel and enjoy your afternoon at leisure. Meals: (B)
Day 9 - Off the beaten path to Cuyuni
Journey across the high-mountain plains south of Cuzco to Oropesa. Rarely visited by tourists, this handsome Colonial-era town is renowned throughout the region for its generations-old bread-making traditions, a skill still practiced by many of the town’s residents. Take in the aroma of freshly-baked breads and sample the traditional Oropesa bread. Then continue to the remote mountain village of Cuyuni where you’ll have a chance to mingle and stroll with residents. They’ll take you into their homes and fields, teaching you about their traditions and a way of life that has changed little over the centuries. Return to Cuzco and dine tonight at your hotel. Meals: (B, L, D)
