Motorists Give Thanks for Falling Pump Prices

Despite recent drop, 2012 Thanksgiving fuel prices post record high

Phoenix, Nov. 21, 2012. Pump prices continue to recede for the fourth straight week, giving motorists a little something extra to be thankful for. This week, the statewide average shed almost 7 cents to $3.448 per gallon. Nationwide, prices dropped nearly 2 cents to $3.426 per gallon.

AAA estimates Arizonans will spend an average of $569 over Thanksgiving weekend. Of this total, 14 percent—or just under $80—will be spent on fuel. To illustrate how prices compare to previous years, below is a list of fuel averages for the week leading up to Thanksgiving from 2008 to 2012:

“Motorists will spend more than ever before to drive to Thanksgiving dinner,” said Linda Gorman, communications and public affairs director for AAA Arizona. “However, it may not feel this way to many drivers, as the state fuel average has shed 25 cents over the last month, and is 45 cents below the peak price for 2012.”

Tucson and Flagstaff hold the low and high state fuel averages at $3.217 and $3.741 per gallon, respectively. Missouri and New York hold the lowest and highest average prices for the lower 48 states at $3.139 and $3.924 per gallon, respectively.
