Memorial Day Gas Prices to be Memorable

Arizonans to pay lowest holiday fuel price in three years

Phoenix, May 23, 2013. A pleasant surprise awaits Arizonans at the pump this weekend – the lowest Memorial Day fuel price in three years. This week, Arizona’s average is up less than a penny to $3.450 per gallon. Nationally, prices rose 5.8 cents to $3.659 per gallon.

AAA released its annual Memorial Day travel forecast this week. The full-service travel agency projects more than 701,000 Arizonans to travel this weekend. Nearly nine in 10 – or 618,000 Arizonans – will drive to their destination.

Below is a list of state fuel averages for the week leading up to Memorial Day. The chart compares prices to previous holiday weekends:

“Nearly nine in 10 Arizonans will ‘drive’ their way into summer this weekend,” said Linda Gorman, director of communications and public affairs for AAA Arizona. “With Memorial Day gas prices at a three year low, it makes sense to kick-off summer with a road trip.”

Tucson and Flagstaff hold the low and high state fuel averages at $3.181 and $3.674 per gallon, respectively. South Carolina and North Dakota hold the lowest and highest average prices for the lower 48 states at $3.246 and $4.235 per gallon, respectively.
