Gas Prices Spring Up a Penny Statewide

Phoenix, May 30, 2013. While Arizonans saw pump prices increase a penny over last week, the state still averages almost 16 cents lower than the nation. This week, Arizona’s average is up a penny to $3.460 per gallon. Nationally, prices dropped 4 cents to $3.619 per gallon.

“The recent decline in the national average has been helped by dramatic price drops in the Midwest,” said Linda Gorman, director of communications and public affairs for AAA Arizona. “If crude prices remain steady, prices should remain flat in Arizona, barring unforeseen circumstances.”

This week marks the official start of hurricane season on June 1. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts another active season with 13 to 20 named storms. Seven to 11 of them are projected to reach hurricane status. Though there were a large number of named storms in 2012, Hurricane Sandy had the biggest impact.

“How a storm could affect oil and pump prices is determined by the severity of damage, if any, to refineries and offshore platforms,” said Gorman. “Last year, Hurricane Sandy actually caused pump prices to fall in many areas due to decreased demand.”

Tucson and Flagstaff hold the low and high state fuel averages at $3.215 and $3.685 per gallon, respectively. South Carolina and North Dakota hold the lowest and highest average prices for the lower 48 states at $3.218 and $4.085 per gallon, respectively.
