Arizona Pump Prices Hit Five-Month High

AAA breaks down the cost of a gallon of gas

Phoenix, Feb. 28, 2013. Arizona pump prices are 56 cents higher per gallon than they were last month, making Arizona’s jump the fifth biggest monthly increase in the country. The statewide average increased more than 11 cents last week to a five-month high of $3.74 per gallon. Nationally, prices increased less than a penny over last week week to $3.78 per gallon.

Four major factors make up the retail price of a gallon of gasoline. To help motorists understand these components, AAA is breaking down the current cost of a gallon of gas, based on January 2013 data from the Energy Information Administration:

“Many motorists are unaware of the breakdown of a gallon of gasoline and are becoming increasingly frustrated with the recent spike in fuel prices,” said Linda Gorman, director of communications and public affairs for AAA Arizona. “While refinery maintenance and the higher cost of crude have kept prices elevated so far this year, AAA maintains that prices should peak soon and start to level out as we move into summer.”

Tucson and Yuma hold the low and high state fuel averages at $3.532 and $3.861 per gallon, respectively. Wyoming and California hold the lowest and highest average prices for the lower 48 states at $3.285 and $4.238 per gallon, respectively.
